Memories

I love finding old pictures you haven't seen for a while. These were taken in the White House East Ballroom where the visually impaired dance company I managed in the late 80s was invited to do a command performance for First Lady Barbara Bush and the senate wives.

We had done a performance at the Kennedy Center for the Egyptian Embassay a few weeks before. While I was backstage getting the kids together, these big guys come up to me and say, "Are you Jill Heyer?" I gulped, scared that one of the kids had done something wrong. "Yes?" I responded tentatively, more asking than telling. "The First Lady would like a word with you." After I recovered from nearly passing out, one guy at each arm escorted me to a hidden room where they parted the crowd and took me right to Barbara Bush. Too cool!

The White House performance was trip. I especially loved how, during a post-performance photo op with the kids, the first lady turned to me and said, "So Jill, when are you and the children leaving for Scotland?" SHE SAID MY NAME!!!!!!!! Laughs. I still miss the kids and wonder how they're doing. Many had tough lives and looked to me for guidance, and I was always rewarded with plentiful hugs and safety escorts to the subway after dark in Washington, DC.

Now that our server is up and running, expect to see more weird trips down memory lane. I get sentimental this time of year....
