The kids had their first day at Kamiak High School yesterday. The enormous campus is kind of intimidating (there are several buildings not to mention over a dozen portable units plus the main building has three stories), but they survived thanks to having maps in hand and in Sam's case some really nice escorts.
Since they're really only here for the fourth quarter, they were put in the classes they had in Tennessee with one small exception. Chris was moved up to Advanced Geometry. This was great news since the school he wants to attend to study game programming/design wants pre-calculus for admission. Taking Advanced Geometry followed by Honors Algebra II/Trig then Pre-Calc is pretty much the only way to get it without summer school.
Tennessee offered little flexibility when it came to moving to the honors/AP track of classes, so I'm grateful this school opens some doors for the kids to stretch themselves.
Sam chose a PE class that would let her finish her two years of health and PE in one year. This happened because their awesome counselor gave her PE credit for colorguard. Anyway, guess what kind of PE class it is? Weight Training! It'll be great for keeping guard muscles strong and for meeting guys as she learned yesterday.
On to the pictures... Let's see, there's a picture of the front of the main building, one of the two-story round lunch commons that opens up to a big grassy hill which the kids can hang out on when it's not raining (Sam did this yesterday),one of the covered bridge over a stream leading to East Campus (yep, I told you there were a lot of buildings), and the snowy one is their performing arts center/arts classrooms. The pictures came from their web site, but we wanted to share just how big the place is. 2,200 students enrolled.
Anyway, time to get everyone ready to do it all over again...
